Mas a despeito dos esforços dos organizadores, os conflitos partidário
ideológicos e mesmo as tensões dos últimos dias da escravidão emergiram na
celebrações do 13 de maio. Liberais e Conservadores brigavam na imprensa
nas ruas pela paternidade da lei da abolição. No boletim que anunciou a abolição
o Diário da Bahia proclamou que o fim do cativeiro era uma “esplêndida vitória
liberal” a despeito de a lei ter sido aprovada por um ministério conservador . Por
seu lado, os conservadores lamentavam que seus líderes fossem pouco
ovacionados durante as celebrações. Nas manifestações de rua daqueles dia
os “vivas” se dividiam conforme a cor partidária. É preciso observar que as disputa
não se limitavam apenas aos liberais e conservadores. Partidários da república
monarquistas se engalfinharam em torno da abolição. Para os monarquistas,
lei era uma concessão da princesa Isabel. Para os Republicanos, a abolição apenas
transformou em lei o que já havia se consumado na prática.
